Lagerstroemia indica 'Hopi' (Pink)

About Your New Lagerstroemia indica 'Hopi' (Pink)

Lagerstroemia indica 'Hopi' is a compact deciduous flowering tree with a rounded crown and a longer flowering season than most. Clear mid-pink crinkled blooms open in summer and continue into autumn, followed by orange and red leaf colour and smooth grey-brown bark that flakes to lighter patches beneath.

It reaches 2 to 3 metres tall and 2 to 3 metres wide, growing 20 to 40 centimetres a year. Full sun and free-draining, fertile soil give the best flowering. It is frost hardy while dormant, tolerates heat and urban conditions, becomes drought tolerant once established, and shows good resistance to powdery mildew.

The compact size makes it useful in small courtyards, townhouse gardens, mixed borders and large containers, and it works as a low flowering avenue where a bigger tree would overwhelm the space. Space plants 3 metres apart in a row. It brings a long flowering season into gardens with very little room.

Frequently Asked Questions

About Hopi Crepe Myrtle

What is Hopi Crepe Myrtle?

Hopi is a compact pink-flowered crepe myrtle, a deciduous small tree or large shrub in the Lythraceae family. It was selected for its long flowering season, mid-pink flowers and resistance to powdery mildew. The habit is rounded and well branched, and it can be grown as a multi-stem shrub or trained to a single trunk.

How big does Hopi Crepe Myrtle grow?

It is one of the smaller crepe myrtles, maturing at 2 to 3 metres tall and 2 to 3 metres wide. That size suits courtyards and small gardens where a full-size flowering tree would be too much. It can be kept tighter with light annual pruning without losing the following season's flowers.

When does it flower?

Flowering runs from summer into autumn, roughly December through March, which is longer than many crepe myrtles manage. Removing the spent heads as the first flush finishes encourages further flowering later in the season. The blooms are held in upright panicles at the ends of the current season's growth.

How fast does it grow?

Growth is around 20 to 40 centimetres a year, moderate and easy to manage. It reaches its modest mature size within several years and then stays there, which is part of the appeal in a confined garden. Warm summers and consistent moisture through the first two years give the strongest early growth.

Can it grow in pots?

Yes, better than most flowering trees, given its size. Use a pot at least 50 centimetres wide with quality potting mix and reliable drainage. Potted plants need regular water through summer and a feed in early spring. Expect a smaller plant than one in the ground, and repot or root prune every few years.

Where does it grow best in Australia?

It grows across most of temperate and subtropical Australia, including Sydney, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne and inland districts where summers are hot. Heat drives the flowering, so the display is strongest in warm, sunny areas. In cool, damp regions with short summers, flowering starts later and is lighter.

How do I care for Hopi Crepe Myrtle?

Water through the first two summers, then only during dry spells. Feed in early spring with a complete fertiliser to support the season's flowering, and mulch to keep the roots cool. Prune lightly in late winter, taking off spent seed heads and any crossing wood. Remove suckers from the base if you want a clear trunk.
