About Elaeagnus macrophylla

Elaeagnus macrophylla, the Evergreen Silverberry, is a broad rounded shrub with unusually thick foliage. The leaves are wide and leathery, matt green above and coated underneath with a silver felt, so the whole plant shifts colour as it moves in the wind. Small scented cream flowers appear in autumn beneath the leaves.

It takes full sun or part shade and grows in poor sandy ground, light clay and everything between, provided drainage is reasonable. Established plants handle light to moderate frost, salt wind and extended dry periods. Growth is around 40 to 80 centimetres a year. Coastal, warm temperate, Mediterranean and subtropical districts all suit it.

This is a plant for hard sites: front line coastal screening, exposed windbreaks, batter slopes and car park edges where something has to hold together with no attention. It works equally well as a loose feature shrub for its foliage colour. Once through its first summer it needs almost nothing, which is why it turns up in council specifications.

Frequently Asked Questions

About Evergreen Silverberry

What is Elaeagnus macrophylla?

Elaeagnus macrophylla is an evergreen shrub from coastal Japan and Korea, grown for tough silver green foliage rather than for flowers. The leaves are broad, thick and leathery, with a silvery coating on the underside that shows as the foliage moves. It forms a dense rounded bush and is used mainly for screening in exposed positions.

How big does Evergreen Silverberry grow?

It settles at roughly 3 to 4 metres tall and 3 to 4 metres across, forming a broad rounded shape wider than it is tall in open ground. It responds well to trimming, so it is easily held at 2 metres in a smaller garden. Growth is dense from the base up, so it screens properly at eye level.

Is it evergreen or deciduous?

Evergreen. It carries foliage year round and does not drop in winter, which is the reason it is chosen for screening. Older leaves are shed gradually through spring as the new flush comes on, rather than all at once, so the plant never looks bare. Foliage colour holds through the cold months with no bronzing.

Does it need sun or shade?

Full sun gives the densest growth and the strongest silver in the foliage. It also grows well in part shade, though the habit opens up and the plant reaches for light. Deep shade is the one position to avoid. In hot inland gardens some afternoon shade is fine and does no harm to the form.

Will it handle salt spray and wind?

Yes, and this is where it earns its place. The waxy silver coating on the leaves protects against salt burn and moisture loss, so it can be planted in the front row of a coastal garden where most shrubs scorch. It also takes constant wind without shredding, making it a genuine windbreak plant rather than just a hardy one.

Can it be grown in a pot?

It grows well in a large container, ideally 50 centimetres or wider, in a free draining potting mix. Potted plants stay smaller and need watering through summer, but the tough foliage handles the reflected heat of a balcony or courtyard better than most evergreens. Repot or refresh the top of the mix every second or third year.

How do I care for Evergreen Silverberry?

Water regularly through the first summer to establish it, after which occasional deep soaks are enough. Prune in late spring or after flowering to shape, cutting back into the previous season's wood as required. Remove any vigorous plain green shoots at their base. One application of a general fertiliser in spring is plenty on poor soil.

Long Term Care For Your Elaeagnus macrophylla – Evergreen Silverberry

Watering: Water deeply twice weekly through the first 12 months. Once established, reduce to once weekly in dry periods. Mulch helps maintain consistent moisture.

Mulching: Apply a 5 to 7 centimetre layer of organic mulch over the root zone, keeping it 5 centimetres clear of the trunk.

Pruning: Minimal pruning required. Light tip prune in late winter to maintain shape if used as hedging or screening. For a clear trunk feature, remove lower branches as the tree grows.

Pest and disease: Hardy against most pests and diseases. Occasional scale or caterpillar inspection in warm humid conditions is all that's needed.
