About Agathis robusta
Agathis robusta, or Queensland Kauri, is a tall, long-lived conifer native to Queensland’s subtropical rainforests. Known for its straight trunk, symmetrical shape, and dark green, glossy foliage, it’s a stately tree well suited to larger landscapes, parks, and feature planting in open areas.
Typically growing up to 30–40 metres in ideal conditions, but more commonly 15–25 metres in cultivation, it develops a strong central leader and clean trunk, making it useful in formal planting schemes or as a large shade tree.
They look excellent when planted as a feature in lawns, as avenue trees in large-scale plantings, or allowed to stand alone in open spaces where their clean form can shine. Agathis robusta performs best in full sun with well-drained soil and benefits from protection during early establishment. Low maintenance once settled, and tolerant of a wide range of climates outside of extreme cold.
Key Information to Know
Evergreen / Deciduous
Agathis robusta is an Evergreen (foliage year round) Tree
Mature Height & Width
Mature Height: 30–45 m
Mature Width: 8–12 m
Agathis robusta is expected to grow 0.5–1 m per year (fast in optimal subtropical conditions).
Frost Tolerance
Is Agathis robusta frost tolerant?
Agathis robusta is Frost Sensitive – May suffer damage from frost, best in frost-free or protected spots.
Flowering Information
Agathis robusta produces very small, inconspicuous pale-yellow to cream flowers in spring, followed by rounded seed cones. While subtle, these seasonal structures sit high among the foliage and mark the tree’s natural reproductive cycle.
Native Information
Is Agathis robusta an Australian Native? Yes
Agathis robusta is Native to Native to Queensland, Australia, occurring in subtropical and tropical rainforests from Maryborough north to Cape York.
Wildlife Value
Its tall, dense evergreen canopy provides excellent shelter for small birds, while its seed cones support insects and cone-feeding species. The tree’s large structure helps create a stable, shaded micro-habitat that enhances biodiversity in both private gardens and larger landscapes.
Sunlight Information
Agathis robusta will thrive best in:
Preffered Soil
Agathis robusta performs best in well-drained sandy or loam soils and prefers slightly acidic to neutral conditions. It may struggle in heavy clay or poorly drained areas unless improved with organic matter to enhance aeration and drainage. Keep soil evenly moist during establishment, then transition to deep, occasional watering as the tree matures and develops moderate drought resilience.
