PLANT PROFILE

Carpinus betulus ‘Fastigiata’, commonly known as the Upright or Pyramidal European Hornbeam, is a stately deciduous tree valued for its dense, symmetrical, and upright form. The fine, serrated green leaves create a lush, compact canopy that turns rich shades of yellow, gold, and copper in autumn before falling to reveal the tree’s smooth grey bark and elegant structure. Mature trees typically reach 8–12 metres tall and 4–6 metres wide, forming a strong vertical accent ideal for formal and architectural landscapes.

This hardy and adaptable tree thrives in full sun to part shade and in a variety of well-drained soils. Carpinus betulus ‘Fastigiata’ is frost hardy, wind tolerant, and performs well in both cool and temperate climates. It’s low-maintenance once established and suitable for structured plantings, avenue designs, or screening in formal gardens.

They look excellent as feature trees, in symmetrical rows, or used as tall hedges or privacy screens. The combination of its upright habit, fine texture, and seasonal colour make the Upright Hornbeam a classic choice for timeless landscape design.
