PLANT PROFILE

Xanthorrhoea glauca, commonly known as the Grass Tree, is a distinctive and iconic Australian native species. It features a slow-growing trunk covered in old leaf bases, crowned with a tuft of long, narrow, grey-green leaves that can reach up to 1 metre in length. Mature specimens often form single or multi-trunks over time, with plants ranging from 2–5 metres tall depending on age. During flowering season, they produce dramatic spear-like inflorescences up to 4 metres tall, covered in thousands of small white to cream flowers.

This species is extremely slow-growing but exceptionally hardy, thriving in well-drained soils and full sun. Xanthorrhoea glauca is evergreen, highly drought tolerant, and withstands bushfire by regenerating from its fire-resistant crown. It has excellent tolerance for poor and sandy soils and is frost hardy once established. Minimal maintenance is required beyond ensuring well-drained soil conditions and avoiding fertilisers high in phosphorus.

They look excellent when planted as feature specimens in native gardens, used in dry landscapes, or displayed in civic and public landscapes where their sculptural form can be appreciated. They also make striking focal points in rockeries, courtyards, or water-wise gardens.

  • Slow Growth Rate

Feature Planting: Space 2 – 4 m apart

  1. Choose a sunny, well-drained location.
  2. Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball and slightly shallower.
  3. Avoid fertilisers containing phosphorus.
  4. Water deeply after planting to settle soil around roots.
  5. Mulch lightly, keeping material away from the crown.

Use this as a reference when digging your planting hole. We recommend digging at least 10% wider than the dimensions below to encourage strong root development.
