PLANT PROFILE

Quercus palustris ‘Early Fall’, commonly known as the Early Fall Pin Oak, is a deciduous tree valued for its upright, pyramidal habit and reliable autumn foliage colour. Its glossy green, deeply lobed leaves provide dense summer shade before turning vivid red to scarlet in autumn. The trunk is straight with a strong central leader, and younger trees display a neat, uniform shape, making them highly suitable for formal planting. Mature specimens typically grow 12–18 metres tall with a spread of 8–12 metres.

This cultivar is moderate to fast growing and hardy in a wide range of soils, performing best in moist, well-drained positions. Quercus palustris ‘Early Fall’ is tolerant of frost and cool climates, making it suitable for southern regions and temperate landscapes. Being deciduous, it allows warming winter sunlight to penetrate once leaves are shed, while providing reliable summer shade during the growing season.

They look excellent when planted as avenue trees, used in civic landscapes, or grown as shade trees in larger gardens. Their upright, formal habit makes them particularly effective for street planting and structured designs where uniform autumn colour is desirable.
