About Pinus Halipensis
Pinus halepensis, or Aleppo Pine, is a tough, fast-growing evergreen conifer native to the Mediterranean region. Known for its bluish-green needles and broad, umbrella-shaped canopy, it reaches 10–20 metres tall and spreads 6–10 metres wide. Young trees begin with a pyramidal shape, gradually developing into a wide, open crown with age.
Aleppo Pine is highly drought-tolerant, wind-resistant, and thrives in full sun with minimal maintenance. It performs reliably in coastal, sandy, rocky, or nutrient-poor soils, making it ideal for low-water landscapes, windbreaks, and coastal gardens.
They look excellent when planted in open, dry landscapes to create a sculptural, South of France-style effect, or when used to provide high shade in rural or Mediterranean-themed designs. This species is also well suited for avenue planting, shelterbelts, or naturalistic, low-irrigation landscapes.
Key Information to Know
Evergreen / Deciduous
Pinus Halipensis is an Evergreen (foliage year round) Tree
Mature Height & Width
Mature Height: 10m - 20m Approximately
Mature Width: 6 – 10 meters
Pinus Halipensis is expected to grow Approx. 30 cm – 70 cm per year.
Frost Tolerance
Is Pinus Halipensis frost tolerant?
Pinus Halipensis is Frost Hardy – Survives heavy and frequent frost without damage.
Flowering Information
Pinus halepensis produces small, inconspicuous yellow male cones and reddish female cones in spring. While not showy, these seasonal structures mature into classic woody pine cones that sit neatly among the fine, blue-green needles.
Native Information
Is Pinus Halipensis an Australian Native? No
Pinus Halipensis is Native to The Mediterranean region, particularly Spain, southern France, Italy, Greece, and North Africa, where it grows naturally on rocky hillsides and coastal plains.
Wildlife Value
Its cones produce seeds that attract parrots, cockatoos and other seed-eating birds, while the dense branching offers roosting and shelter for small birds. The textured bark and needle litter support insects and microfauna, contributing strong ecological value in dry-climate and coastal plantings.

Preffered Soil
Pinus halepensis performs best in well-drained sandy or loam soils and tolerates slightly acidic to slightly alkaline conditions. Highly adaptable to poor, rocky and coastal soils, it may struggle in heavy clay or waterlogged ground unless improved with coarse material and organic matter to increase drainage. Keep soil evenly moist during establishment, then transition to deep, infrequent watering as the tree matures to support its drought hardiness, root stability and healthy evergreen canopy.

Drought Tolerance
As a young tree it requires regular watering, but once established the Aleppo Pine develops exceptional drought tolerance. One of the toughest Mediterranean species, it thrives in hot, dry, coastal and exposed environments and maintains robust evergreen growth with minimal supplementary watering.
