About Pinus halepensis – Aleppo Pine
Pinus halepensis, commonly known as the Aleppo Pine, is a hardy conifer recognised for its tall, irregular form and open, spreading canopy. The bark is grey to reddish-brown, becoming fissured with age, and the needles are slender, light green, and borne in pairs. Mature trees typically reach 12–20 metres in height with a spread of 8–12 metres. Cones are ovoid, woody, and persist on the tree for several years, contributing to its rugged appearance.
This species is fast-growing under favourable conditions and is noted for its resilience in hot, dry climates. It is drought-tolerant once established and tolerates coastal exposure and poor soils, but it is not suitable for frost-prone or waterlogged sites. Pinus halepensis is evergreen, requiring full sun to develop a strong crown. Maintenance is minimal, with occasional removal of lower branches if required. Its dense foliage provides shelter and habitat for birds and other wildlife.
They look excellent when planted in coastal landscapes, used as windbreaks, or grown as feature trees in large open spaces. Aleppo Pines are also used in civic plantings, parks, and along roadsides where a durable, low-maintenance conifer is required.
Key Information to Know
Evergreen / Deciduous
Pinus halepensis – Aleppo Pine is an Evergreen (foliage year round) Tree
Mature Height & Width
Mature Height: 12–20 metres
Mature Width: 8–12 metres
Pinus halepensis – Aleppo Pine is expected to grow 50 – 100 cm per year (fast).
Frost Tolerance
Is Pinus halepensis – Aleppo Pine frost tolerant?
Pinus halepensis – Aleppo Pine is Not Frost Tolerant – Cannot survive frost, should be avoided in frost-prone areas.
Flowering Information
Pinus halepensis produces small, inconspicuous yellow male cones and reddish female cones in spring. While not ornamental, these seasonal reproductive structures mature into classic woody pine cones that sit attractively among the fine, blue-green needles.
Native Information
Is Pinus halepensis – Aleppo Pine an Australian Native? No
Pinus halepensis – Aleppo Pine is Native to The Mediterranean region, particularly Spain, southern France, Italy, Greece, and North Africa, where it grows on rocky slopes and coastal hills.
Wildlife Value
Its cones and seeds attract cockatoos, parrots and seed-eating birds, while the dense branching provides excellent roosting and shelter for small birds. The rough, fissured bark and needle litter also support insects and microfauna, enhancing biodiversity in large gardens and dry-climate landscapes.
Sunlight Information

Preffered Soil
Pinus halepensis performs best in well-drained sandy or loam soils and tolerates slightly acidic to slightly alkaline conditions. Exceptionally hardy, it adapts to poor, rocky and coastal soils but may struggle in heavy clay or waterlogged sites unless improved with coarse material and organic matter for better drainage. Keep soil evenly moist during establishment, then move to deep, infrequent watering as the tree matures to support its drought resilience, strong root anchoring and healthy evergreen canopy.
