About Olea europaea ‘Manzanillo’ – Manzanillo Olive
Olea europaea ‘Manzanillo’, commonly known as the Manzanillo Olive, is one of the most widely planted olive cultivars worldwide. It is a small, evergreen tree with narrow, grey-green leaves and a naturally rounded crown. The bark is grey and becomes gnarled with age, adding ornamental value. In spring, clusters of small white to cream flowers appear, followed by medium-sized, oval-shaped olives. This cultivar is dual-purpose, suitable for both table use and oil production, and mature trees typically grow 4–8 metres in height with a spread of 4–6 metres.
This variety has a moderate growth rate and is hardy, thriving in full sun and free-draining soils. It is highly drought tolerant once established, tolerates light frost, and withstands coastal conditions. Olea europaea ‘Manzanillo’ is evergreen and long-lived, requiring minimal maintenance beyond annual pruning to maintain form and encourage fruiting. It is self-fertile, though fruit yield may increase if planted with pollinator varieties.
They look excellent when used as feature trees in courtyards, grown in rows as productive groves, or planted in large pots for edible landscapes. They are also popular in civic plantings, Mediterranean-style gardens, and avenues where both structure and seasonal fruit are valued.
