About Your New Livistona australis – Cabbage Tree Palm / Fan Palm
Livistona australis, commonly known as the Cabbage Tree Palm or Fan Palm, is a tall, slender palm with a crown of large, fan-shaped fronds. The trunk is smooth and grey, ringed with old leaf scars, and topped with a symmetrical canopy of deep green, segmented leaves that can span up to 2 metres wide. In summer, mature trees produce long sprays of small cream-white flowers, followed by black, round fruits that attract birds. This palm typically grows 15–25 metres tall with a spread of 3–5 metres, forming a striking vertical feature.
This species is moderately fast-growing in warm climates and adapts to a range of soils, including sandy and coastal conditions. It is evergreen, hardy, and tolerant of salt-laden winds, making it especially suited for coastal landscapes. Livistona australis prefers full sun but will tolerate part shade when young. It is low-maintenance once established, with minimal pruning required beyond the removal of old fronds.
They look excellent when planted as avenue palms, used as vertical accents in large gardens, or grown as shade and feature palms in civic and coastal landscapes. Their strong architectural form also makes them popular in public spaces, resorts, and poolside plantings.
