About Your New Copper Large Cauldron - THAI LIMESTONE
The Copper Large Cauldron is a hand-made Thai limestone bowl with a broad, deep cauldron shape and an aged, earthy finish. The limestone range is made mainly in white, with yellow and copper tones also produced. This one measures D105cm x H83cm and weighs around 145kg, with dimensions varying slightly between pieces.
The pots are fired in low temperature kilns, which sometimes leaves non-structural firing cracks that are then hand finished. That is part of the aged look rather than a fault. Being low fired, they are not recommended for areas that get severe frost. Elsewhere they weather outdoors and improve with age.
At this size it works as a standing feature in a courtyard, at the head of a driveway, in a commercial forecourt or beside a pool. It suits a mature olive, a clipped topiary, a cycad or a mass of succulents. Left unplanted it reads as a sculptural object in its own right.
Frequently Asked Questions
About Copper Large Cauldron
What is the Copper Large Cauldron made from?
It is hand-made Thai limestone, fired in a low temperature kiln and finished by hand. The limestone range comes in aged, earthy tones, mostly white but also yellow and copper. Every piece is made individually, so the depth of colour and the surface texture differ from one cauldron to the next.
How big and how heavy is it?
It measures D105cm x H83cm and weighs approximately 145kg empty. Dimensions can vary slightly because each piece is hand-made. At that weight it needs several people or lifting equipment to move, and it is worth deciding on the final position before the cauldron is set down and planted.
Is it frost resistant?
Not fully. Because these pots are fired at low temperature, they are not recommended for areas that get severe frost. In most populated parts of Australia that is not a concern, but in an alpine or high tableland garden the safer choice is a planter made for hard frost.
Why are there fine cracks in the surface?
Low temperature firing sometimes produces non-structural firing cracks, which are then hand finished. They do not affect the strength of the pot and they are considered part of the aged limestone look rather than a defect. Each piece carries a slightly different pattern of these marks, which is the point of the finish.
Can it be used as a water bowl?
It can, though it is at its best as a planter. If you intend to hold water in it, the inside must be properly sealed first, as it must be with any pot of this type. Without an internal seal the limestone will draw moisture through and marks will show on the outside.
What sort of planting suits it?
The scale asks for something with presence. A mature olive, a clipped bay or buxus ball, a cycad or a large agave all sit well in a bowl this wide. A mixed planting of succulents and sedums spilling over the rim also works. Shallow rooted plants suit the bowl shape better than deep rooted trees.
How do I care for it?
Wash it down with mild soapy water and a soft bristle brush or a rag, then rinse. Keep harsh chemicals and abrasives away from the limestone finish. Marks from potting mix can be wiped back as they appear. If the bowl holds water, empty it occasionally and clean the interior.
