PLANT PROFILE

Camellia hiemalis ‘Hiryu’, commonly known as Hiryu Sasanqua Camellia, is a compact evergreen shrub valued for its vibrant winter blooms. It has glossy, deep green foliage and a dense, upright growth habit. From late autumn through winter, it produces semi-double flowers of brilliant cerise pink with golden stamens, providing colour in the cooler months when few other plants are flowering. Mature specimens typically reach 2.5–3 metres in height and 2–3 metres in width, with a naturally rounded shape.

This cultivar grows at a moderate rate and is hardy once established. It prefers slightly acidic, well-drained soils and will perform best in part shade, though it can adapt to full sun with adequate moisture. Camellia hiemalis ‘Hiryu’ is frost hardy, low-maintenance, and evergreen, providing year-round foliage structure alongside seasonal flowers. It is well-suited to temperate gardens and is long-lived when cared for correctly.

They look excellent when used as clipped hedges, planted in rows along driveways, or grown as stand-alone feature shrubs in courtyards and gardens. They are equally effective in shaded garden beds where they bring colour through winter.

  1. Plant in a partly shaded position with morning sun.
  2. Prepare the soil with compost and ensure it is free-draining.
  3. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball.
  4. Water well after planting and mulch to conserve soil moisture.
  5. Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape.

Use this as a reference when digging your planting hole. We recommend digging at least 10% wider than the dimensions below to encourage strong root development.
