PLANT PROFILE

Backhousia citriodora, commonly known as Lemon Myrtle, is a fragrant Australian native tree prized for its lemon-scented foliage, dense evergreen habit, and attractive clusters of creamy-white flowers. It’s widely planted for both its ornamental value and its culinary and aromatic uses.

Typically growing to 6–8 metres high and 4–6 metres wide, Lemon Myrtle has soft, lance-shaped leaves that release a strong citrus aroma when crushed. Flowering in summer, it produces fluffy, cream-coloured flowers that attract bees and pollinators. It performs best in full sun to part shade, in well-drained, fertile soil, and will tolerate light frost once established.

They look excellent when planted as feature trees in native gardens, grown in large pots near outdoor entertaining areas, or used in informal screening where year-round foliage and fragrance are valued. A multipurpose tree with high ornamental and practical value.

  1. Choose a full sun or part shade location with good drainage.
  2. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and backfill with native soil.
  3. Water in thoroughly at planting to remove air pockets.
  4. Apply mulch to conserve soil moisture, and keep clear of the trunk.
  5. Water regularly during establishment (12–18 months) for best results.

Use this as a reference when digging your planting hole. We recommend digging at least 10% wider than the dimensions below to encourage strong root development.
