From late winter into spring it carries dense cylindrical spikes of bright golden flower along the stems, thick enough to colour the whole plant at a distance.

Give it full sun and almost any drained soil, including sand, gravel and poor coastal ground. Growth is fast, around 70 centimetres to a metre a year, and established plants handle drought, salt wind and light to moderate frost. The nitrogen fixing roots lift fertility in the soil around them, which helps neighbouring plants.

Most of its work is done on rural boundaries, road batters and revegetation sites, where quick cover matters more than fine detail. How much do I need?

Work on roughly one third planting mix to two thirds of the soil you dug out of the hole. For a shrub out of a 200 millimetre pot that is only a few litres. An advanced tree going into a large hole will take considerably more. Judge the quantity by the volume of the hole rather than the size of the plant.

Can I use it in pots?
