Pyrus calleryana ‘Cleveland Select’, or Chanticleer Pear, looks excellent as a striking upright feature tree or formal avenue planting where space is at a premium but visual impact is essential. Its tall, narrow pyramid form, reaching 11–12 metres high and 3–6 metres wide, creates strong architectural structure in streetscapes, parks, and modern residential gardens.
The tree offers year-round appeal, with glossy dark green leaves in spring and summer that transform into vibrant scarlet, plum, and orange shades in autumn—providing a brilliant seasonal colour display. In spring, the canopy is covered with abundant bright white flowers, adding delicate contrast before the foliage returns.
‘Cleveland Select’ adapts well to varied soil types, including clay and intermittently wet or dry soils, and thrives best in full sun. Its moderate drought tolerance and low-maintenance nature make it a practical choice for urban and suburban planting.
For enhanced landscape effect, plant with shade-tolerant groundcovers or ornamental grasses underneath to soften its formal silhouette and add layered texture. This pear cultivar is perfect for avenue rows, screening, or as a standout specimen where clean lines and seasonal colour are desired.
