Pinus Thunbergii - Japanese Black Pines

Size: 100L
Sale price$2,100.00

Pinus thunbergii, or Japanese Black Pine, is a dramatic evergreen conifer valued for its rugged, windswept form and textured black bark. It grows 8–20 meters tall (smaller with pruning) with a 4–8 meter spread. Its dark green, stiff, twisted needles grow in pairs, and its thick scaly bark adds year-round visual interest.

Slow to moderate growing initially, it thrives in full sun and poor, sandy, or compacted soils. Highly drought and salt tolerant, it’s ideal for coastal gardens, niwaki-style pruning, bonsai, and sculptural landscape features. This long-lived tree also supports local wildlife by providing shelter and food.

Japanese Black Pine’s unique form and resilience make it a prized specimen for collectors, designers, and traditional Japanese garden aesthetics.

How to Plant Pinus Thunbergii - Japanese Black Pines

Planting Tips: Ensuring a Strong Start

Site Selection: Choose a full sun location with well-drained soil.

Digging the Hole: Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball but no deeper.

Planting: Ensure the top of the root ball is level with the soil surface. Backfill with native soil and water deeply.

Mulching: Apply a 5–7cm mulch layer around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds, keeping mulch away from the trunk.

Watering: Water regularly during establishment; once mature, occasional deep watering is sufficient.
