Growth is tight and congested rather than open, which gives the plant its compact, cushion like outline.
Filtered light or morning sun gives the best leaf colour, with protection from harsh afternoon heat in warmer regions. Soil should be free draining and kept evenly moist. It adds only 15 to 40 centimetres a year and is frost tolerant once established, performing well through cool temperate and temperate zones.
Because it stays small, Shaina works in courtyards, narrow beds, rockeries and decorative pots where a full sized maple would crowd the space. It is often used in pairs flanking a doorway or a set of steps. For small gardens it gives the character of a Japanese maple at a manageable scale.
